During his remarks at the 50th Anniversary Gala Dinner, Chair of Council and Board Greg Mills shared the following messages sent from alumni in absentia:
In 2021, alumna Emily Osborne (2020-2022) interviewed alumnus Charlie Beasley (2000-2002) about his memories of Burgmann College, and his journey to executive LQBTQ* leadership
When were you at Burgmann and could you tell us about your experience?
Congratulations to Sophie Rosen who has won this year’s E M Cumming Essay Prize for her essay titled, 'And Abel'. With thanks to a generous donor, the E M Cumming Essay Prize is an annual $1000 prize open to all Burgmann residents, where an essay is read before a meeting specially convened for this purpose, known as the reading meeting.
Every generation of Burgmann residents knows and loves Burg Day. The annual celebration honouring St Beryl with a breakfast of pancakes and Baileys (in former times, chicken and champagne), along with St Beryl’s blessing of the brick and the rambunctious Brick Race that follows, have been cherished traditions since Burgmann’s beginnings in 1971.
Dr Susanna Price’s bequest to Burgmann College is a tribute to her father, to the progressive and inclusive collegiate experience at the foundation of a lifelong career in international development—and to future generations of students embarking on their journey to independence.
John Mitchell’s belief that “the shortest distance between poverty and wealth is education,” paired with immense gratitude for its supportive community, inspired his bequest to Burgmann College.
Covid-19, the most impactful pandemic in a century, continued to deliver surprises in Burgmann’s 50th year. Rather than last year’s shutdown, Burgmann residents went into lockdown at the College. So close to lecture halls and the Burgmann bar and yet so far away, residents studied in their rooms and exercised in pairs. Thankfully the Burgmann spirit shone through with online entertainment and Covid safe activities quickly established to keep the community sane and safe.
